Bowling with colleagues

On a rainy Thursday evening, I went bowling with my co-workers. We drove from the office to a nearby parking garage and started bowling. After a few strikes and some drinks, we returned to the parking garage. To our shock, we found that our car windows had been broken, especially the ones that had laptops inside.

What was peculiar was that some laptops were not stolen despite being turned off, such as mine which was on standby mode and kept in the trunk where it was not visible. We later learned from the insurance that the thieves used scanning equipment to detect the wifi/bluetooth signals emitted by standby laptops.

As a result, my development machine, a 13-inch M1 Macbook Pro, was among the stolen items. If anyone comes across this serial number, please be aware that it belongs to my stolen laptop.

Purchase Date: February 2021

I probably won't be able to claim much from the insurance, so this turned out to be an expensive night of bowling.

One lesson learned is that if you have to leave your valuable devices in your car, at least make sure to turn them off.
